Joan Maguire Featured Artist at Third in the Burg

M & M member, Joan Maguire of Hershey, Pennsylvania, will be the featured artist at City House Bed & Breakfast, 915 N. Front Street, Harrisburg. The event will be held April 19, 6-9pm during the Third in the Burg city wide event. The show, titled “All Things Bright and Beautiful,” will have more than 75 original watercolor paintings, abstracts and photography.

A unique collection of watercolor on Yupo paper (a plastic-like surface) and Masa (rice paper), along with paintings on more traditional surfaces will be featured.  “This 3rd in the Burg gallery-style event will be a little different than others in town,” said Maguire.  “First, the building itself is absolutely stunning.  You immediately feel at home when you walk in the doors.  The high ceilings and excellent light through the extensive windows make it a superb location for showcasing works of art.”

The first 50 visitors to City House B&B will also be treated to a signed and numbered 5X7-inch print of one of Maguire’s watercolors.  “There will be something here for everyone – watercolor demonstrations on Masa, try your hand at painting on Yupo, original works of art starting at $25, cards, Giclee (archival) prints, photography, original framed art and refreshments!”

Talking about her art Maguire said “I have done quite a few painting this year using Yupo paper.  Because the paint is not absorbed into the paper your colors remain as vibrant as you have applied them.  Most of my paintings on Yupo have at least 15 paint layers which result in a deep richness.”  The original Yupo paintings include scenes of koi, palms, waterfalls, large florals and abstract. “You cannot take yourself too seriously as a painter on Yupo because the paint easily flows and pools” Maguire said.  The artist will have an area where visitors can dabble with the Yupo paper and watercolors.

Creating art on Masa paper has been an intriguing process for the artist.  Preparing the surface to start a painting is done by crumbling, opening, crumbling, soaking, squeezing, staining, gluing and then waiting for the Masa to dry.  A demonstration of this process and the stunning results which create semi-transparent background images and subtle textures will be given throughout the evening.
